The PORR Group is investing in a modern pumped storage power plant in Ebensee, Upper Austria, aimed at enhancing renewable energy storage and contributing to regional energy stability.
Information on the Target
The PORR Group, an established leader in infrastructure development, is undertaking a groundbreaking project to construct a modern pumped storage power plant in Ebensee, Upper Austria. This initiative capitalizes on the resurgence of pumped storage facilities as a vital component of the energy transition, harnessing excess electricity generated from renewable sources—such as wind and solar—to store energy in the form of elevated water. With a construction timeline set for four years, the first test electricity production is projected to commence by the end of 2027, leading to full operational status expected in early 2028.
The project makes use of the Traunsee as a lower reservoir, while a new upper reservoir is being developed in the mountains. Power will be generated by releasing the stored water back for electricity generation, providing a green alternative to fossil-fueled peak-load power plants. This facility is set to enhance regional energy storage capabilities and has significant potential for the entirety of Upper Austria.
