Trafigura has signed a six-year offtake agreement with Syzygy for sustainable aviation fuel from the NovaSAF-1 facility in Uruguay, marking a significant step towards enhancing low-carbon solutions in the aviation industry.

Information on the Target

Syzygy Plasmonics, through its subsidiary SP Developments Uruguay S.A. (Syzygy), is set to establish the groundbreaking NovaSAF-1 facility in Durazno, Uruguay. This state-of-the-art agro-industrial complex will be the first of its kind globally, dedicated to the conversion of biogas into sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). The innovative technology employed by Syzygy utilizes renewable electricity to transform biogas into SAF via light-driven chemical reactors. NovaSAF-1 aims to produce SAF that complies with the Renewable Fuels of Non-Biological Origin (RFNBO) standard, significantly reducing life cycle emissions by 90% compared to traditional fossil-based aviation fuels.

Industry Overview in Uruguay

The aviation fuel industry in Uruguay is poised for transformative growth, driven by increasing regulations mandating the use of sustainable fuels. As countries worldwide, particularly in Europe and the UK, adopt stricter emissions targets, the demand for advanced biofuels, including SAF, is rising. Uruguay's unique positioning allows it to capitalize on its renewable energy resources, particularly from wind and solar, making it an attractive hub for the production of sustainable fuels.

The government's commitment to fostering sustainable practices further enhances the industry's landscape, incentivizing investments in renewable energy and clean technology.
