Target Information
Black Bull Biochar (BBB), a sustainable agriculture startup co-founded in 2022 by Alex Clarke and Hamish Creber, has successfully raised £4 million in a late seed funding round. The funds will be utilized to enhance its operations in the North West of England and to facilitate the company's expansion into northern Europe. The financing structure includes £2 million in equity from notable investors such as TSP Ventures, the Greater Manchester Combined Authority Investment Fund, and Old College Capital, the venture investment arm of the University of Edinburgh. Additionally, BBB has secured £2 million in debt financing from Innovate UK’s Future Economy Facility.
Black Bull Biochar specializes in producing biochar, a stable carbon product derived from organic materials like woodchip and straw pellets through a process called pyrolysis. This innovation not only contributes to decarbonizing industrial heat systems but also enhances soil health in agriculture by providing a high-quality soil amendment that improves long-term productivity. With recent projects involving Avara Foods, M&S, Ahlstrom, A.W. Jenkinson, and Arla Foods, the funding will support the establishment of new production sites and the relocation of BBB's headquarters from London to Manchester, while also expanding its research capabilities.
