Information on the target
Revego Africa Energy Limited (Revego) has made a significant move in the renewable energy sector by acquiring a 12% stake in the 50 MW Bokpoort Concentrated Solar Power (CSP) asset located in the Northern Cape for R204 million. Bokpoort CSP stands out as one of South Africa’s premier CSP projects, aligning perfectly with Revego’s strategic mandate to invest in operational and dividend-earning renewable assets. The stake is being purchased from Metier, a prominent private equity firm in South Africa, which manages the Lereko Metier Sustainable Capital fund.
Bokpoort CSP operates as an independent power producer, with Saudi Arabian-based ACWA Power International serving as the operational partner. Notably, it was among the first CSP projects established in South Africa under the Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement (REIPPP) programme. The project features significant onsite energy storage capabilities through thermal salt storage, allowing it to achieve remarkable operational milestones, including a record of continuous operation for 13 days.
Industry overview in the target’s specific country
The renewable energy sector in South Africa has experienced substantial growth, driven by the country's commitment to diversifying its energy sources and reducing reliance on fossil fuels. The government has implemented various initiatives, including the REIPPP programme, which has successfully attracted both local and international investments in renewable energy projects. This programme has facilitated the development of numerous solar and wind projects, contributing to the country’s energy security and sustainability goals.
South Africa's renewable energy landscape is characterized by a mix of technologies, including solar photovoltaic (PV), wind, and concentrated solar power (CSP). The CSP technology, in particular, has gained traction due to its ability to provide reliable energy generation, even during peak demand periods, thanks to its thermal storage capabilities. This positions CSP as a crucial component in the transition towards a more sustainable energy system.
Furthermore, the South African government has set ambitious targets for renewable energy generation, aiming for 20,000 MW of renewable capacity by 2030. This commitment is supported by various policy frameworks and incentives designed to encourage investment in the sector. As a result, the renewable energy market is poised for continued expansion, with significant opportunities for both existing players and new entrants.
In addition to government support, the growing awareness of climate change and the need for sustainable energy solutions among consumers and businesses has further fueled the demand for renewable en…
