Information on the target
Wayra Solar, a photovoltaic power plant developed by Orygen, is located in Marcona, Ica. The facility has recently completed its construction phase and has begun the energization process. Currently, the project is undergoing testing and commissioning, with an initial injection of 10.5 MW into the National Interconnected Electric System (SEIN). The commercial operation is anticipated to commence in the last quarter of 2026, at which point the plant will contribute its full renewable generation capacity to the national grid.
This project represents a significant milestone, having achieved over 70% completion with an estimated investment of approximately US$72 million. Once operational, Wayra Solar will have an installed capacity of 94 MW, featuring more than 130,000 bifacial photovoltaic panels and solar tracking structures that optimize sunlight capture and electricity production. Orygen estimates that the plant will generate around 256 GWh of clean energy annually, sufficient to power approximately 230,000 Peruvian households, while also preventing the emission of about 44,000 tons of CO₂ each year.
Industry overview in the target’s specific country
The Photovoltaic Solar Systems & Equipment industry in Peru has been experiencing robust growth, driven by the country's commitment to renewable energy and sustainability. The Peruvian government has implemented various policies and incentives to promote the adoption of solar energy, recognizing its potential to diversify the energy matrix and reduce reliance on fossil fuels. This has led to an increase in investments in solar projects, making Peru one of the emerging markets in the renewable energy sector in Latin America.
Peru's geographical advantages, including high solar irradiation levels, make it an ideal location for photovoltaic projects. The country has vast expanses of arid land, particularly in the southern regions, which are well-suited for solar installations. As a result, several large-scale solar farms have been developed, contributing significantly to the national grid and enhancing energy security.
In recent years, the government has also focused on integrating renewable energy sources into the existing energy infrastructure. The introduction of net metering and auction mechanisms has further incentivized private investments in solar energy. As a result, the photovoltaic sector has attracted both domestic and international players, leading to increased competition and technological advancements in solar equipment and systems.
Looking ahead, the outlook for the photovoltaic solar industry in Peru remains positive. With ongoing investments and a supportive regulatory framework, the sector is expected to continue expanding, contributing to the country's renewable energy target…
