Information on the target
TC Energy Corporation has announced the sale of Energía Occidente de México (EOM), which owns the Guadalajara-Manzanillo Pipeline, to affiliates of ESENTIA Energy Development, S.A.B. de C.V. The transaction is valued at approximately $560 million (US$400 million). The Guadalajara-Manzanillo Pipeline spans 313 kilometers and has the capacity to transport up to 500 million cubic feet per day (MMcf/d) of natural gas. This pipeline plays a crucial role in connecting imported liquefied natural gas (LNG) supplies near Manzanillo with continental gas supplies near Guadalajara, serving power plants and industrial customers in the states of Colima and Jalisco.
The transaction is expected to close in the first half of 2027, pending customary closing conditions and regulatory approvals. TC Energy's President and CEO, François Poirier, emphasized that this sale aligns with the company's strategy of optimizing its portfolio and creating long-term value, allowing for the redeployment of proceeds into high-value growth opportunities across North America.
Industry overview in the target’s specific country
The Natural Gas Distribution industry in Mexico has experienced significant growth over the past few years, driven by increasing energy demand and a shift towards cleaner energy sources. The Mexican government has implemented various reforms to liberalize the energy sector, encouraging private investment and enhancing competition. This has led to the expansion of natural gas infrastructure, including pipelines and distribution networks, to meet the rising needs of both residential and industrial consumers.
Mexico's strategic geographic location allows for the import of natural gas from the United States, which has become a key supplier due to its abundant shale gas resources. The integration of the U.S. and Mexican natural gas markets has facilitated a more reliable supply chain, reducing costs and improving energy security for Mexican consumers. As a result, natural gas has become the preferred fuel for electricity generation, accounting for a significant portion of the country's energy mix.
Moreover, the Mexican government has set ambitious targets for renewable energy integration, which further underscores the importance of natural gas as a transitional fuel. The country's commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and promoting sustainable energy practices has led to increased investments in natural gas infrastructure, positioning the industry for continued growth. The Guadalajara-Manzanillo Pipeline, in particular, is critical for supporting the energy needs of the region and facilitating the transition to a more sustainable energy landscape.
As the demand for natural gas continues to rise, the distribution sector is expected to play a pivotal role in ensuring that supply meets consumption needs. The o…
