Transcend Capital Partners has invested in i2Cool, a Hong Kong startup specializing in zero-energy, refrigerant-free passive cooling technology, aiming to expand its innovative product diversity and contribute significantly to energy efficiency and sustainability.
Information on the Target
Transcend Capital Partners is pleased to announce its latest investment in i2Cool, a startup based in Hong Kong. i2Cool has developed an innovative zero-energy, refrigerant-free passive radiative cooling coating that effectively lowers indoor temperatures by 6-8°C. Originally established in 2022, with research initiated in 2016, i2Cool emerged from the School of Energy and Environment at City University of Hong Kong (CityUHK), taking part in the HK Tech 300 programme.
The groundbreaking cooling coating is the result of extensive research led by Professor Edwin Chi-Yan Tso and his team at CityUHK. It mimics the unique thermoregulatory properties of the Saharan silver ant, which reflects sunlight while dissipating heat. The coating, which can be applied like paint, utilizes the principles of optics, thermodynamics, and materials science. It boasts an impressive 95% solar reflectivity and mid-infrared emissivity, facilitating a significant reduction in surface temperatures by 30-42°C, thereby minimizing reliance on air conditioning systems and reducing energy consumption.
