Rimonim Agro Fund has invested in the Israeli gene-editing company eggXYt, which develops technology for pre-incubation sex detection of chick embryos, aimed at enhancing sustainability in the poultry industry.
Information on the Target
eggXYt is an innovative Agtech start-up based in Israel, co-founded by Professor Dani Offen from Tel Aviv University and Yehuda Elram. The company specializes in gene-editing technology that facilitates the immediate sex detection of chick embryos right after the eggs are laid, significantly before they undergo the standard 21-day incubation period. This groundbreaking advancement addresses the pressing issue within the egg supply chain, where hatcheries traditionally struggle to identify the sex of chick embryos in a non-invasive manner.
By employing gene-editing tools such as CRISPR, eggXYt enables hatcheries to determine the sex of chicken embryos without invasive procedures. This not only minimizes the unnecessary hatch and disposal of approximately 8 billion male chicks per year but also helps optimize the overall production processes. Consequently, it promises significant cost savings for the industry while contributing an additional 8 billion eggs to global supply, thereby meeting the growing demand for ethically sourced egg products.
