AST SpaceMobile has signed a $64.5 million agreement to acquire S-Band spectrum rights, enhancing its global mobile broadband capabilities through its low-Earth orbit satellite network.
Target Information
AST SpaceMobile, a significant player in the satellite communication sector and part of the Seraphim portfolio, has entered into a strategic agreement to acquire global rights to S-Band radio frequencies registered with the International Telecommunication Union (ITU). This acquisition will add up to 60 MHz of mid-band spectrum to its existing capabilities, allowing AST SpaceMobile to connect standard smartphones directly to its low-Earth orbit (LEO) satellites without requiring additional equipment. The acquisition enhances AST’s service offerings, particularly in dual-use applications for both commercial and government sectors.
On August 5, 2025, AST SpaceMobile signed the deal to buy spectrum rights for frequencies between 1980–2010 MHz and 2170–2200 MHz. These frequencies are particularly suitable for providing high-speed internet directly to mobile devices, thereby extending connectivity to regions with limited or no mobile service. The total transaction amount is $64.5 million, with $26 million payable upfront and the remainder contingent on performance milestones. The deal is anticipated to close in the latter half of 2025, following necessary regulatory approvals.
